Mr. John Oleson

Welcome to 5th Grade!

I am very excited to be teaching 5th grade here at New Underwood Elementary! This will be my 11th year teaching in a 5th grade classroom. Prior to coming to New Underwood, I was a Title One Diagnostician/Interventionist in a 4/5th grade school, ten years in the fifth grade classroom, one year in a second grade classroom, and completing my student teaching in a first grade classroom. Teaching is my passion in life, and I love witnessing the growth of the students as they progress throughout the school year.

Another passion in my life, is my family! I have been married to my wonderful wife, Alice, for 30 years. She is a K-3 music teacher and this will be her 29th year in education. Together, we have three children. Our son, Zachary, is married to his lovely wife, Ashten, and they have one son (our grandson), Nikola. Our daughter, Morghan, is a senior at Black Hills State University, earning her degree in elementary education. And our youngest, Annalise, is a 7th grader (this year) here at New Underwood Jr. High.

My wife and I both graduated from Black Hills State University with our degrees in education. I also earned my master's degree from South Dakota State University for K-12 administration. My wife and I are passionate about lifelong learning, with our own children, and with our students, as it's a true asset for being successful in life.

I look forward to the many challenges that will happen this year in 5th grade. "Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time." -Thomas A. Edison
