Welcome to New Underwood School District

New Underwood Schol District is honored to be able to serve military families residing in our area.  We understand the challenges that military families face concerning frequent relocations and strive to make the transition smooth and that all families and students feel welcome in our school.  If you have questions, please reach out.  We are here to assist you and are excited to begin our journey as educational partners.

The Purple Star Designation is awarded to military-friendly schools that have demonstrated a major commitment to students and families connected to our nation’s military.

To be designated as a Purple Star School, schools must meet rigorous qualification criteria. There is no one-size-fits all for these programs; however, the following requirements are a required:

1. Designate a staff point of contact for military students and families.
The individual can be a counselor, administrator, teacher, or other staff
member.

2. Establish and maintain a dedicated page on its website featuring
information and resources for military families.

3. Maintain a student-led transition program.

4. Provide professional development for additional staff on special
considerations for military students and families.

A Purple Star School program helps families:
While all schools in the state adhere to the Military Interstate Children's Compact to ensure equity and a smooth enrollment for military families, the purple star program is focused on helping the student transition to the school and provides a welcoming environment for them to come to.

While any one of our office staff can and will assist with enrollment, information can be directed to our Purple Star School Coordinator, Mr. John Oleson. He can be reached at (605)754-6485 Option #2 or John.Oleson@k12.sd.us.
